Ceramic wall tiles like Punto, Rombini, Cordeaux, and 3D Carve are semi-coarse, clay-based tiles that are shaped, dried, and fired in a kiln at no more than 1,650 degrees Fahrenheit. This process results in a softer, lighter tile that is easy to install and cut. Ceramic tiles are suited for wall applications such as bathroom walls, kitchen backsplashes, shower walls, and fireplace surrounds. Ceramic tiles are not freeze thaw resistant and are not recommended for outdoor use.
Ceramic Tile Benefits:
-
Cost-Effective: Ceramic tile is generally less expensive than porcelain tile.
-
Easy Installation: Ceramic tile is easier to cut and install.
-
Wide Range of Options: Ceramic tile comes in a vast array of colors, shapes, textures, and designs.
-
Glaze Options: Ceramic tile offers a wide range of glaze options, including matte, glossy, and textured finishes.
-
Sustainable: Ceramic tile is made from natural materials and is recyclable.

Porcelain floor and wall tiles like Bon Bon, Adobe, Crea, and Roma are made from a more refined blend of clay and minerals. These tiles are fired at higher temperatures, making them denser and less porous than ceramic tiles. Standards set by the Tile Council of North America define porcelain tile as a nearly waterproof clay tile with a water absorption rate of 0.5% or less. The increased density and durability make porcelain tiles highly resistant to wear and tear, making them an excellent choice for high foot traffic areas. They are suitable for interior floor or wall applications and exterior wall applications, and some are rated for exterior floors (check slip rating for floor use).
Porcelain Tile Benefits:
-
Durability: Porcelain tile is more resistant to scratches, chips, and cracks.
-
Water Resistance/frost proof: Porcelain tile has a lower water absorption rate, making it ideal for exterior walls (and floors if floor rated), steam showers and wet areas.
-
Stain and acid resistant: Porcelain tile is more resistant to stains and easy to clean.
-
Hardness: Porcelain tile is harder and more dense than ceramic tile.
-
Sustainable: Porcelain tile is made from natural materials and is recyclable.
